Saving lives by wasting less

First to placate the sceptics, a recent office clearance from the University of Westminster resulted in over £65,000 of office furniture and equipment being shipped directly to a new health centre in Romford.

Setup in double quick time to tackle the Covid-19 outbreak, the doctor setting up the centre said "this is going to save lives"

This fantastic story was made possible because some amazing people at the University who chose to work with Reyooz to re-distribute and re-purpose an epic amount of office furniture and equipment to make way for a large scale refurbishment. A whopping £750,000 of in kind donations to hundreds of good causes.

London universities going zero waste

Westminster are not alone though, this wasn't a one off. Reyooz is working with UCL, University of Greenwich, Queen Mary University and Cranfield University. Together we're directly and indirectly saving lives and saving the planet - simply by being less wasteful.

Together we've redistributed over £3 million of fabulous office furniture and equipment. For those of us who care about the climate change crisis we've diverted over 600 tonnnes from landfill and incineration and saved an estimated 2,400 tonnes of embodied carbon. That's the equivalent to burning 84 tonnes of coal - enough to power a house for 185 years.

Universities, perhaps more so than many other organisations, are subject to increased pressure from staff, stakeholders and students to deliver in a big way on sustainability issues.

“As a University, students and staff rightly expect us to “do the right thing” for the planet and for the community. Working with Reyooz is one of the most effective ways we can do that”

Tackling climate change

In a sustainability nutshell, there are three things the built environment needs to get right to hit carbon zero. There are many levels and subtleties below the surface, but I think it's fair to say they are Enegy, Procurement and Waste.

Reyooz was designed and built from the ground up to tackle waste.

“We regularly refurbish parts of the estate, which means we’re left with lots of great furniture without a home. We have very limited storage on campus so we ended up disposing of it all, which is heartbreaking”.

Waste is just a resource in the wrong hands

So much of what organisations waste could have been reused, at least 50% was the guess from WRAP several years ago. After 3 years of working on the ground with facilities, property and waste management teams we're confident that figure is a lot higher.

In almost 3 years we've recycled - wasted - 3% of everything we have cleared from our client sites. That means 97% of every building clearance is reused, repaired or refurbished.

You may immediately think we must be cherry picking, we're not. In 2020 Reyooz has evolved to be a full service clearance company. Our teams will clear absolutely everything from your workplace and then work tirelessly with our community of over 15,000 members to find a "new home" for everything.

Almost anything can be reused

A significant part of what we reuse is office furniture and equipment. Tables and chairs, appliances, small electrical items. We also handle IT equipment.

However, reuse goes way beyond the obivous. We believe by taking a reuse first approach - almost anything can be reused. We've rehomed fixtures and fittings, carpet tiles, suspended ceilings, 10 tonnes of rubber safety mats, sanitary ware, kitchens and catering equipment, forklift trucks and electric vehicles.

We even reused an x-ray security scanner, just like the ones you put your bags through at the airport.

Free stationery for schools

Recently we've moved onto electrical junk - the endless cables and ethernet wiring that hides below the surface of every office - we have partners who can reuse it.

Another waste stream that is always overlooked because it's relatively insignificant - stationery. Tonnes of the stuff is trashed on every office clearance. We now box it up and re-distribute it to schools and charities free of charge. A little gift that means a lot.

Whether you're clearing a cupboard or an entire office building, Reyooz delivers a zero waste office clearance service.

Zero waste = massive social impact

Our delivery teams are on the road every day, delivering fantastic office furntire and equipment to charities, schools, small businesses and individuals.

The heartwarming and wonderful good news stories flood in and our clients of course feel the glow. Any office move can be stressful, however being able to tell your colleagues where their old furniture is going can transform the atmosphere.

It's hard to get excited about an energy saving bulb, it's easy to feel the joy of knowing your desk and chair are helping charities like Caritas Anchor House get more homeless people off the streets.

“The sofas have created a new youth zone in our church, creating a sense of ownership in our teens. Selecting, ordering, and delivery were all great, thank you.”

Rev. Jon Somerville
Woodford Baptist Church, London

“Getting furniture this cheap is brilliant. The huge sofa makes such a difference to the space, it's far more welcoming than it was before. Thank you Reyooz.”

Scott Taylor
Forest Recycling Project, Waltham Forest

“I’ve been keeping my eye on reyooz for a couple of months and when I saw the Silver tambour cabinets I knew straight away that’s what I needed. My home office finally feels complete.”
